Petri-nets and Hybrid-state Markov Processes in a Power-hierarchy of Dependability Models

چکیده
This paper extends the power hierarchy of dependability models developed by Malhotra and Trivedi (1994) and Muppala et al. (2000) to include Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes (PDP) and PDP-related Petri Nets. PDPs are known as the largest class of continuous-time hybrid state Markov processes not involving diffusions. Since Petri Nets have proven to be extremely useful in developing Markov process models of complex practical processes, there is a clear need for a type of Petri Net that can play such role for developing PDP models. This paper defines such Petri Nets and shows their relation to PDPs and other Petri Nets. Copyright c ©, 2003, IFAC

Power-Hierarchy of Dependability -Model Types
Conclusions This paper formally establishes a hierarchy, among the most commonly used types of dependability models, according to their modeling power. Among the combinatorial (non-state-space) model types, we show that fault trees with repeated events are the most powerful in terms of kinds of dependencies among various system components that can be modeled (which is one metric of modeling pow...
متن کاملDependability Models Based on Petri Nets and Markov Chains
This paper shows a way to use stochastic Petri nets as formal availability models instead of Markov chains. Advantages of stochastic Petri nets over Markov models are illustrated on example models. The ability of stochastic Petri nets to represent the structure of modelled design and its use in further research is introduced.
متن کاملA Modeling Framework to Implement Preemption Policies in Non-Markovian SPNs
ÐPetri nets represent a useful tool for performance, dependability, and performability analysis of complex systems. Their modeling power can be increased even more if nonexponentially distributed events are considered. However, the inclusion of nonexponential distributions destroys the memoryless property and requires to specify how the marking process is conditioned upon its past history. In t...
متن کاملFormal approach on modeling and predicting of software system security: Stochastic petri net
To evaluate and predict component-based software security, a two-dimensional model of software security is proposed by Stochastic Petri Net in this paper. In this approach, the software security is modeled by graphical presentation ability of Petri nets, and the quantitative prediction is provided by the evaluation capability of Stochastic Petri Net and the computing power of Markov chain. Each...
متن کاملDependability and Security Models (Keynote Paper)
There is a need to quantify system properties methodically. Dependability and security models have evolved nearly independently. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a classification of dependability and security models which can meet the requirement of professionals in both fault-tolerant computing and security community. In this paper, we present a new classification of dependability and secur...
